Bend knife
forging with a Viking

Hi there,
The second knife from the top, is a bend knife I forged during a blacksmith class and just finished up, with a wood handle and sharpening on my new sharpening station, the pictures here are from the two blogs, where I share my joy from the tour and the making of the knife.
It was a one day class with the Danish Viking blacksmith Jonas Bigler, an extremely skilled smith and a wonderful man.
I participated the class, to get the rust of my skills, get some critique from a master and got even more than I dreamed of.

The post is from the blog: https://www.lumberjocks.com/mafe/blog/129668

Pictures:
1. Bend knife / spoon knife.
2. Happy monkey forging.
3. Laminating steel.
4. The results from class.
5. Shaping the cutting edge.
6. Making a handle.

Hope this can inspire you to make your own tools.

Best thoughts,

MaFe

Wow, I am super jealous. Very nice work!!! I have been researching making my own brake drum forge for a year or so, have gathered some of the parts and an HF anvil. Still need to get a hammer and tongs, and buy/make a post vice. I wish there was a class nearby me. Do you watch Forged in Fire?

Hi ho,
Lew, thank you, they were all a joy to make, so perhaps thats why…
drewpy, when I started out here on LJ, almost ten years ago, my skills were at a really limited level, so it has been a fun journey, that happened while being here, thanks to loads of inspiration and the fact we all share. Thank you.
SMP, you should get into the forging, soooo much joy, I just use a small gas forge, it's easy and cost no more than the coal forge. If I one day get a workshop outside the city, I will make a coal forge no doubt. No I did not know about the Forged with fire, but I just checked and can see it's highly trained blacksmiths there. I have a load of unposted blogs about the forging part, I'll see if I can get to post them soon. Time have wings here and my wish to do list grows…
Jim, I have to admit it really is doubble the joy, when they are all made by your own hands. That joy can't be bought.
madts, thank you Madts. ;-)
MrLaughingbrook, thank you, trust me it's worth the efford and a class can get the black magic out of it, so you can jump in fearless.
Thank you for the comments,
Mads
