Necessity is the mother of invention. Any LJ needs something they make something.

Other LJ'ers see the idea, the idea evolves into something similar to fit their needs.

The only problem: There seems to be limited space in any shop for the ideas that are here.

Mike, I really like this…I also do a lot of hand cut dovetails…and also get a sore back from all the bending over.

Nice blog too. I see you practice dovetails like Rob C. I have his video series, but would love to see him in person.

Kansas & Woodworm - The ACME screws and nuts were purchase from McMaster-Carr and the hand wheels were purchased from Reid Supply. The original bore was only 3/8" and I need to go up to 1/2".

Woodhacker - Yes I like Rob's technique for dovetails. I have most of his DVDs. I have also taken a couple short classes from him. He's a really nice guy and a great teacher.

Well I won't take credit for thinking up the idea. I took the idea from Fine Woodworking. For those of you who have an online subscription, you can find the article here. There's even a video on their web site that goes along with the article. If i fine a way to shoot some video myself, I'll post how it works for me.

Fantastic! I'm in the process of building my own bench, and was trying to find similar hand wheels that would fit on a 1-1/8" diameter ACME screw… but to no avail… I think I'll have to find a way to turn those myself someday. I like how yours turned out- real nifty! and I'm sure it helps the back, and seeing those lines better.
