Project Information

Continuing my small project use of scrap, I made a box for the tools I always want at the bench.

Simple resaw of stock to give 1/4 parts that are then fitted with spacers to form slots. The only trick here is to put a spacer on the end so you can make a dovetail joint in the glued up side. Also the bottom has to cover the slots so the tools don't extend through.

Two internal caddies were made to hold specific items, but not permanently attached so they can be easily replaced or adjusted. I also bend some copper to make a rule holder.

All in all it works great and I have what I want at my fingertips for benchwork and can move the box as needed. I sit at the bench a great deal (back issues) so I can slide the box where needed, then just remove it if I need the entire surface for something.

Holds:

Set of four standard Stanley Chisels
Fishtail Chisel
Marking Knife
Carving Knife
1" Work Chisel
Screw Driver for Plane Irons etc
6" Rule with Stop
12' Tape
Large and Small Compass
Card Scrapers
Marking Gauge
Dovetail Saw
Angle Gauge
Bench Vise Block
Glasses - reading and safety
Large and Medium Mallet
Glue
.5 and .7 Pencils
Marker
Marking Crayon
Center Punch
Eraser
Engineers Square
Wax

More detail here, but there is not much to it!

A great tool- functional and beautiful. May it help to keep entropy in check.

Good looking box with a well thought out layout. The chisel holder along the side of the box is very clever. I need one of these so I don't spend so much time searching for tools.

Yea, the chisel part was the driver. Knocked one off the bench the other day and that was the end of it until resharpening time (cement floor). I use my glasses, tape, pencil and small rule regardless of what I am doing in the shop and when I can't find them I spend more time looking than working.

Unrelated, but the other day I lost my small 6" steel rule and I ended up looking for it forever. In the house, in the shop, on the floor etc. I eventually found it between the table saw fence and the fence guide. Seriously?
