Project Information

Some of you saw pictures of the bench build in the blog here. I finished the bench today after applying 2 coats of Tried and True oil. The pictures I posted are a couple from along the way up to today. The case is made of baltic birch ply and the face frame is 1" poplar. The plans and hardware package are from Benchcrafted. Both the front leg glide vise and the tail vise are so smooth you can you can use one finger to move them. The face of the front chop and bench have suede applied and the grip is beyond belief without exerting any pressure at all on the hand wheels. The case is finished with General Finishes Milk Paint, Bayberry Green. The top is 26"x83" and is 1-3/4" hard maple. The square dog strip runs the entire length of the top, and I have a few more dogs to make. I really enjoyed building this bench, I did have some challenges along the way, but learned I have more skills than I give myself credit for sometimes. The design is by Ron Brese, of Brese Planes, the hardware and plans come from Benchcrafted. Thanks for looking.

Great craftsmanship. There are some stores like Pottery Barn, that would sell this, for a small fortune, for use in the living or dining areas. Really nice looking cabinet.

Beautifully done Rick. I know how important it was for you to get this just as you wanted it and it sure looks like you did. This will become another of your heirloom pieces. The top looks super. You'll be proud of the vises and using them will give you as much satisfaction as the projects you build. The whole thing looks massive; 1.5" doors? It'll take a lot of rugged use and abuse, though I doubt you'll ever misuse it. Congratulations on a super build. Enjoy. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, from Tennessee.

Great build with some interesting design choices. What material did you use for the doors? It's got a nice rustic look to it with those things…

Rick, the same to you and yours from No. KY, I'm looking forward to a nice meal with the grandkids, nice to be back home.
Thanks to all for taking a look and your kind comments, means a lot.

Db host the doors as well as the face frames are 5/4 net 1" poplar, same with the battens on the back of the doors.
