Bee hive equipment

These look cool Tom . Did you have a book or one to copy or have you been into beekeeping to know all of the elements

Tom those look really nice. Is you son going into this as a hobby or to try and make some money at it? What did you use for lumber and where did you get the plans?

Nice supers! You gonna paint outside too?

I go past a hive field and they have multicolored hives. Not sure if bees use colors to find home?

I bought a hive with all of the components from a supplier. I used it as the model for mine. There are complete plans online to build your own.

I personally got into keeping bees this year when a friend captured a swarm of honeybees and sold me the bees along with some used hive equipment. We have already harvested about (27) half pint jars of honey.

My son is going into it as a hobby at the present time.

I built the equipment out of white pine, which is commonly used for this purpose in the beekeeping world. It is light, inexpensive, and if properly painted will provide years of service in the field.

Yes, I'd like to see your vacuum and wax melter! That may be something I'll need in the near future.

Yes, my son will apply a primer and two coats of quality exterior latex paint to the outside of the hive boxes.

The bees don't care about the color of the boxes. That is up to the beekeeper's preference.

Thanks! Yes, the bees should be pretty happy in their new homes. And, if they produce a goodly amount of honey, the beekeepers will be happy too!

Actually, some beekeepers use a hot-melt wax finish on some of their equipment.

As for the frames you see in my pic, we bought the components and assembled them. It made more sense to purchase these, because they are made from "select" pine and are way too intricate to make when you can buy them pretty reasonably.

Great project. The buzz around the neighborhood is that you've stung by more than the woodworking bug. Just bee careful. -SST

I am indeed trying to bee careful. And, yes, you have detected that I do have the "bug" about keeping bees.

Actually, beekeeping and woodworking go together very well. It's nice to be able to build your own stuff.

I read someplace that spending too much time in an apiary can give you hives and then your honey won't come near you. (ouch) -SST
