Project Information

With over 12" of snow yesterday, my woodworking is done for the year! I did manage to squeak one more in though.

This project was entirely of reclaimed wood from the dismantled loft bed project. All the wood is dimensional pine construction lumber, nominal 2×6. In all, there were two pieces of 2"x6"x8' used to create this table.

The table top and shelves were constructed using the "rip and flip" method. The legs were cut with large mortises to allow for the stretchers to fit in.

The stretchers were assembled first, all corners mitered. Using a couple scraps of 80/20 set a perfect right angle, the pieces could be clamped in place, glued and nailed with a couple brads. With the frames assembled, it was just a matter of attaching the four legs, glued and clamped in place. No mechanical fasteners used.

Since this was reclaimed wood, there were a lot of holes and other defects that had to be addressed. In most cases, the defects were simply avoided during the cutting. However there were a few that were unavoidable and in each of those cases epoxy was used to fill in voids, or epoxy and a piece of dowel.

The top and shelves were then cut to size, the shelves required a notch to fit around the legs. Space was left to allow for the natural expansion and contraction of this fast growth pine. All three surfaces were attached using counter-sunk screws with dowels glued in place to conceal them. it was finished off with three coats of Min wax water-based poly applied by my new finishing expert (and recipient of the table).

Very nicely done with some challenging jointery. Looks like the recipient will enjoy it, knowing he helped in completing the project. Sorry to heard your shop time is done for the winter.

Thanks John! Even if I had a furnace in the garage (which I've been debating for many years), I still need to get cars in there… so yeah, I'm shut down until April.

COOL table with Very COOL joinery for the shelves & top…

Did you think of splining the mitered corners but just decided on glue?

Very similar to other tables you have made except for the Mitering Challenge!
That use of 80/20 stuff to glue the miters looks interesting… How did you mount the 80/20 parts to the Flat area?
I guess you get one side clamped into place then, just hand force the next piece into the corner while clamping it in place? Did you need more than 2 hands to do it? I can see the need for at least 3 hands! LOL Looks tricky…

Very NICE! Good use of inexpensive wood / lumber!

Sorry you will be Closed until April… Enjoy the Winter!

Thank you & have a great Thanksgiving!

Joe,

It appears tricky, but it worked quite easy. The aluminum is just clamped to the bench, used a framing square to get it set.

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well! I will not enjoy the winter!
