Wood And Materials Used
Black walnut, wenge, figured hard maple, poplar.
I finally finished the bedside table my wife has been waiting on forever. This is the first of two, the other going on my side of the bed.

This piece was adapted from a design by Mike Pekovich. I made a dresser some time ago that is identical in construction and design but of much larger proportions. Its frame and back panels are of black walnut. The side panels, top, and drawer fronts are rendered in wenge. The drawer sides are figured maple. The drawer bottoms, guides, and runners are made from poplar.

I finished it with a sealer coat of a 1 pound cut of shellac, then followed by two coats of Minwax Tung Oil Finish, and then a coat of wax. The wood was dimensioned using power tools, but the joinery and surface prep were done with hand tools.

That is some fine work. Nice flush drawers, beautiful finish, great grain matching, and the drawer pulls are lovely. Very nice work.

Very nice. Really like the dark, two-tone wood combo. Great job. I checked out your previous dresser that you mentioned. Sweet...

I don't know that I would have thought of combining walnut and wenge, but I'm warming up to it. Very fine craftsmanship. Immaculate dovetails.

I first saw the wenge/walnut combination in the March/April 2010 issue of Fine Woodworking. There was an article by Garrett Hack on how best to use contrast in wood grain and color to enhance a project. He also notes in the article what not to do in that same regard. I am lucky that I live relatively close to a supplier of hardwood lumber of excellent quality and can thus obtain some of the more exotic wood species for my projects.

Thanks much for your kind words about the nightstand.
