Project Information

I made this stool for my daughter-in-law, she was having a difficult time getting into her bed while pregnant. I started making four of these, but it has been difficult to get much shop time lately so I backed off and finished this one. I have the pattern cut out for the others stools and will complete them as I get time. BTW, I decided I had to complete the first one before my grandson turns one.

I started this project from a Finewoodworking plan, but I change it up a little by experimenting with inlays, using a curve shape for the top, added a whale tail pattern to the stretcher, and added single point beads to the legs. I had a lot of fun with hand tool on this project, but I did find the wedge tenon and mortise to be challenging. It was difficult for me to get a tight joint without chip out. The stool is made out of cherry and the rectangular shaped inlays are purple heart and the strip inlay was purchased from Woodcraft.

Cheers!

Very attractive stool. The inlay work is well done. What is the tool beside the router plane in the photo?

Very nice job, i really like the way you changed the inlay design from one end to the other. The total design of the piece shows an artistic talent.

Randy, the tool next to the hand router is a Veritas Beading Tool. I used it to cut in the bead on the legs.

Everyone, thanks for the comments. Although it took me some time to build I really enjoyed it. Found the hand tool work is a great way to relax.
