Project Information

I needed a way to practice making dovetailed drawers without the pressure of it being in a full scale piece of furniture. So my goal was to make these boxes for storing seed (my wife has an impressive collection of seed she saves for the garden). The first one made of teak (not pictured here) was not an impressive piece but does now live in my home, in the cupboard storing tea. I went with cedar for the second box and I am really pleased with the results. Not only were my joints much cleaner but I noticed I got progressively faster, and more accurate as I went along. The bottom is solid poplar and was a real treat to bevel, why you would but a plywood bottom in a drawer and deprive yourself this treat is beyond me.

Bottom is mineral oil and beeswax finish and the sides just have a few coats of mineral oil. Thanks for looking.

I like those very stout looking dovetails. The reveal on the drawer is pretty cool looking too.

Nice piece. Hand cut dovetails are a lot of fun, aren't they.

Oh yes. I still look forward to playing with those double twisty dovetails but I guess I have to learn to crawl before I walk.

Thanks Julio, I have a good stockpile of poplar and I am going to have to maintain that because this wood works so well for this.

Thanks Mads, I hope life is treating you well on your side of the world. (that goes for you too Julio, and you David)
