Project Information

I found a place for this special piece of curly Oregon Maple (aka Big Leaf Maple).
It is set into a frame of Brazilian Rosewood bordered with Maple and Wenge.
The handle is Wenge and Paduak.
The body is also Brazilian Rosewood.
The trays are Myrtlewood and Paduak.
Finish is lacquer.
Picture 5 shows the magnets used to keep the trays in place. This allows for easy removal or the trays can be flipped front to back if desired.

Picture 3 shows how the handle nestles into the body. It is tedious work but I really like the results.

My thoughts:
I have to say that the deep valleys and high ridges in this maple panel cannot be appreciated in these photos. I am always impressed how this works. When holding the box and turning away from the correct angle of light the effect flattens out and you can see how the grain turns in different directions and the shading changes. But when looking at it up close, it seems impossible that I cannot "feel" the textures. I look at it and try to see how this optical illusion works and it hurts my head, it simply looks too real. I never tire of wood like this.

Thanks for looking.
Andy

Love the medallion effect on all your small boxes, but Bigleaf is in my top five lumbers and that piece just sings. Great work, and great interior layout. Bottom line: beautiful inside and out!

Good to see you Andy. I've missed you around here.
This is another sweet piece of work. I really like the outside the box creativity that you put inside your boxes.
You make the most imaginative "trays and dividers" around. Also, I think curly big leaf maple is about my favourite wood.

Andy,
I'll echo Paul. Good to see you back. Lovely box, done with you signature panache. No one does this kind of box better. You set a high bar.
