Project Information

I received an ultimatum from the lady of the house. Either I make a new vanity for the bathroom or she would spend roughly the equivalent of California's education budget on a new one. So I undertook my first "cabinet" project. Storage space is in short supply in our house so i planed to replace the old one with a shorter counter and more storage. The tall cabinet goes from floor to ceiling and I made the kick plate at the bottom of the vanity into a large drawer rather than waste the space. I didn't have the tools (at that time) to make raised panel doors so I had a cabinet shop make them unfinished for me. I had to re-route the drain and the water supply but as I see it-- I saved enough money to buy a new table saw.

wait… have you heard about California's education budget lately?

Teachers are getting laid off, classes are getting bigger, and programs are getting cut. My children will luckily not have to attend California schools after this year. I feel sorry for the teachers, at least the good ones, and there are lots of good ones. They are required to teach more kids and are given less to do it with.

Sorry to go off track, I forgot what this post was about for a minute LOL… excellent looking vanity. I like the toe kick drawer. I haven't seen that before.

RDW, this is a nice vanity and storage cabinet that you added to the bath. And the floor looks good as well. Adding a drawer to the kickplate was a good idea and makes effective use of "dead" space.

Looks great. Put the tall cabinet on the right and it would be perfect in my bathroom.

Big difference between the before & after.
A lot of nice storage space now.
That toe kick drawer was pretty a smart idea.
Have fun picking out your new Table Saw.

We have a similar storage issue in our home. I am seriously considering a similar approach to my master bath vanity… Very nicely done!

Sorry to resurrect a 2-year-old thread, but was wondering if you'd answer a noob question: how did you get the top right drawer to fit under the sink bowl? Did you have to make the sides half-height?

Great-looking vanity. I'd like to build something similar for our home.

Glad to see this old thread brought back to life.

You did an AWESOME job on this project. Just a beautiful result.

BUT … as a former San Diegan … your wife's threat … didn't amount to a whole lot of money ;-)

Shuft:
Yeah, the sides of the drawer on the right are much shorter than the drawer front would indicate. I just made them so they would fit under the sink with about 1/2 inch to spare. They are about 5" high whereas the drawer front is about a foot.

NBeener:
Back when I made the original post I think California was still semi-solvent and simply headed toward bankruptcy. Now that they have arrived there, it's all funny money so the education budget is just an "academic" discussion. But, I did get a new table saw and a new Grizzly 17" band saw out of the project and considered it a savings over the original estimate.

Regards….Ron
