Project Information

What do you do when you have pennies coming out of your wazoo? Yes, you make a bank. I guess you now have some knowledge of my wazoo. Why did it just get very quiet in here? Awkward.

I woke up this morning and saw the copious amounts of pennies hanging out on my nightstand. Little loitering buggers had nowhere else to go, no place to call home, no sanctuary offering asylum. I decided to remedy that unfortunate situation. I then decided that situation called for box-making time (and there was much rejoicing).
I'll use any excuse for some quality man-time in the shop. (Let me unpack that last statement lest someone be offended. I only assert woodworking time with quality man-time because I myself am a man. (on a side note, I did meander on into Jo-ann Fabrics a few days ago looking for some buttons (I had just taken some pants to a tailor), and I had never felt so out of place. I HAVE been in stores like that before, but for some reason, I felt like I didn't belong. Strange. Anyway, I digress. So, the moral of the story is that any person, if they want to be a woodworker, has the right to do so.))

Ok, where was I?

Ah, yes! I remember. Woods used are in order of appearance: Ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, white oak, black walnut. Welp, that's all she wrote, folks. Have a great day if I don't see ya!

OK so I finally saw the slot, so I do see the "bank". If you were thinking ahead, you may have even glued/screwed/nailed it into a solid piece so no one could get any bright ideas about SPENDING some of that cold, hard cash on you !

But I cant for the life of me figure out what the heck is that walnut upright stick with the 3 white hashes on it for?

Hahaha, Joe! You wanna know what it is for? Artistic expression. It only serves an aesthetic purpose. The wood that we get at my job/shop always has these paint marks on them and there is just something about the paint/letters/numbers that I find irresistible. I'm surprised I don't utilize those pieces more often because I have literally hundreds of them.

Totally unrelated to woodworking, but I have had the EXACT same experience at every Jo-Ann's Fabrics I've ever been to (half a dozen at least). If you have a Hancock Fabrics around instead, try that. I've only been to one, so maybe I just got lucky, but it's worth a try. I didn't feel out of place at all.

I thought it was for measuring how much moola he had!
Artistic expression works too. Nice solution, Josh.

It's a nice bank. After all the years of inflation it's gotten to the point where even quarters are hardly worth the energy expended in bending over to pick them up off of the floor or ground. This allows us to not even worry over having to put a lock on our spare change boxes. I've got several coin boxes on my dresser and even the ash tray in my pickup is overflowing. Spare change is becoming sort of a nuisance. However, I like the character of the coin box that you built. Nice work.

He might do that before he puts 'em inside, Joe.
