Project Information

This is the second upgrade on this old 197? Rockwell Band saw. The first was to lower it to my new stature.
When I was trying to make through M&T for the screen door, I found that my 5 inch cedar practice piece bogged it down. I had this 2hp 110/220v motor from an old compressor I got at a yard sale recently.
It just does fit under the base. There is only about 5/8 to 3/4 inch between the floor and the cover for the capacitors. I ran a scrap of redwood through from the screen door. It didn't act like I was cutting anything. There is virtually no vibration and with the new fence i made from aluminum angle and extrusions, it cuts straight as an arrow.
Since I can't figure out how to get these pictures on a forum, I'll just ad my tool gloat here. The fifth pic is my new 2002 Delta 6" jointer I just got. I asked Maddie to drop off a $100.00 deposit to hold it for me. She saw it and paid the other and brought me a receipt, PAID IN FULL. "Just so I would love her a little be more." Now I ask you, Do I have THE WIFE or what?
The sixth pic is of the 1944 W/T and the 1952 W/T drill presses. I kept the 1944 model and gave the 1952 model to my Buddy Charlie Mock.
Thanks to Stefang for the alignment tutorial on setting up the band saw. If I keep learning how to do things on the KISS principle from all you Lumberjocks, one day I will be able to drop the second S. lol
Thank you for your interest in my little projects and the mentoring I have received from everyone.
Rand

I'm glad your your new motor has worked out well Rand. Your shop looks really well organized and your cute assistant looks sharp too.

Your nice shop reminds me what a mess mine is in after leaving it a couple of months ago. My next project is a thorough clean-up. Woodworking isn't much fun in the middle of a mess!

The little guy is my grandson, Dominic. I have three grand sons that love to "help" in the shop. JB 2 yo, Dom 3 yo, and Alex 5 yo. They have their own tools and a place to keep them and when they leave them out, the tools disappear for a week. I have other big boys that can't put tools away yet. The big boys are my Marines that come home with my son for week ends. They helped to re-roof the house two years ago.
Amazing how many young Marines were raised in the building industry.

Charlie, thank you. Amazing what a can of spray paint can cover. lol
Hal, it really makes a big difference. But I will need to add some angle iron extensions for the 6×6 cedar beams.

I was thinking of adding the 6 inch extension to give it a 12 inch capacity, but I've read that these sometimes throw the alignment off. Anyone know anything about this? This saw is cutting just about as perfect as you can ask for now. I don't want to screw that up.

Hi Rand and Good health to your grandsons and all the marines. You should really be happy about this. I know how meticulous you are and if you say so about the bandsaw, I always add it with plus. For sure if I see it in real it is much worthy. Good luck and take care for you upcoming projects. I am keeping up with you now…. you have more time to learn things… you've got the long way to go..

When you said "The first was to lower it to my new stature" and I saw the pic w/ the young man, I immediately thought, Rand is Benjamin Button!

Nice work, and say "Oorah" to your boys for me.

Interesting height for a bandsaw. I can see the advantage of looking straight down at the cut. Neat.

Jack1, yeah, it sure beats having it just at nose level. lol It is bad enough catching a kickback in the torso, but those in the mouth suck.
Gary sent me a notice from General of Canada, and they are now lowering a line of their wood working equipment for **************************************** in wheelchairs. lol Maybe I can hit them for infringement on my shop equipment redesigns. lol My BS is lowered from 42 inches at the table to 30 inches.
Be safe, Rand

The feather board worked perfectly on 1 1/2" x 5" cedar, Cant wait to see how it does on the 6×6 beams. If need be, I have some 4×6 beams out back for a taller feather board, but that may require a taller fence. Oh well, if I have to I'll get out the hot wrench and make something that will be a snap. lol

Rand, considering the limitations of height etc placed upon you, you are tackling much larger things than I would. Just goes to show you can't keep a good man down.

This was a great post. IF you haven't already done it, I would suggest adding the words wheelchair, modified, modification, disability to your tags, that way if someone needs to find a modification, they will find your post AND you. :)

Great job on the bandsaw, with the 2HP motor the saw should handle a 6" extension and looking at your saw,
it would fit in at the bottom of the side support beam. you would have to be sure the top and bottom of the
riser were really parallel and the bolt holes were drilled correctly. Some of the bandsaws were made with an
alignment pin to make sure the pieces were set up correctly, a small steel dowel pin works great for this. You would also have to lengthen the saw blade guards on both sides, and the guard over he table also is tied into
the blade guide, some of these guides are operated by gears and not all companies kept the same size rods
between the different size saws, so you might have to get a complete saw guide set up and that can be a
pain, so it is best to check all this out before you start unless you want a long drawn out modification, not that
I have ever had this problem, lol. Know what you mean about the Marines. One stopped by to visit my son
last week and another will be by next week on the way to hunt deer and elk down in Wyoming. Great young
men.

As ever, Gus the 71 year young laborer, trying to become a carpenters apprentice.

I'm jealous of those W/T drill presses. I worked on those all my life before I sold my company. Good old American
cast iron.
