Project Information

Nothing fancy, this was just a skill building box. I bought the aspen (atleast I believe that is what it is) from my local Lowes. The splines were from a small piece of bloodwood I got from a rockler mixed exotic box. I did this box about a year ago. I had intended to make a small tray to ride on the runners inside but I never got around to it.

I doesn't seem like the most durable wood. I pretty sure if I dropped this it would shatter into a million pieces. but I was just happy to see something that wasn't pine or oak at the local big box store. It really stinks living in southwest florida. No hardwood/exotic wood dealers around. My wife even does truss design for the lumberyard here in naples….they don't even carry hardwoods. It's pretty bad when I am jealous of other people being able to get maple, cherry & walnut. I'm not even picky enough to want figured wood at this point!!!

Like you I have found Aspen to be fragile and doesn't take stain very well. However, I got a half-dozen Aspen panel boards for $1 each because they were cull items, most with minor damage. I have had fun making practice projects and furniture that's going to be painted anyhow.

Great looking box! Like the use of contrasting woods and the splines. Great job!
