Project Information

This was a commission by a music lover in Portland. It is an Asian style cabinet with cantilevered boxes for stereo components. It is made with 3/4" pre-finished maple ply and trimmed in stained cherry. It was built using a lock miter and dados. I cut it so that the grain ran continuously down each side which meant for no mistakes, not that I ever make any ;) It has no rear panel to add to the structure so it was imperative the joinery be perfect to maintain strength. It was to hold stereo components that were very expensive so I had to make sure it would hold up.

As you can see I took a few pictures of it.
Thanks and have fun woodworking.

Really nice, Brian. I like the continuous grain on the sides. Can you please explain what part of it is 'asian' style? I'd like to learn different styles. Thanks for sharing.

Those shelves turned out great. I really like the design.

Floating shelf-look I am familiar with. I was not aware it was Asian, nor did I know the name 'Tansu'. Thanks, Brian.

Nothing about this build is Asian or Asian inspired but it's a nice piece, well done.
