Project Information

This is what I came up with for the asian inspired cane. The dragon was a little difficult, but to be honest with myself, the finish was the PIA, and it isn't perfect. But I have to stop myself at some point because the price isn't right, if you know what I mean. I hate that time is money, and wish that I could spend as much time on things as I want to. But I have to move on to the next project. I really do like this cane, and everything can stand some improvements.

As always I welcome constructive criticism, positive or negative.

Sure looks good to me. Do I recognize the wood in the handle?

That is pretty cool.

It looks like the dragon is inlaid. What are the materials and how did you do it? Is it free hand carved? How did you do the cylinder inlay?

Gary, You sure do recognize the material. Thank you for sending it to me.

coloradoclimber, the shaft is walnut, the handle is sycamore, and the inlay is maple. I used commercial veneer for the inlay and just bent it to fit. It was a moderately slow process, but it worked out great. To do the color I sealed the inlay before I did the ebonizing, so that if I got some on the inlay I could wipe it off. It worked out great, and I barely got any on it anyhow. Of course the color did bleed through under the tape onto the handle so I had to fix that. Like I said, the coloring was a PIA. You can see the cane without finish and color on my latest blog.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Hey, very nicely done! Now if you can make a design that's less of a PIA, you can price them for profit. The natural wood colors would also keep the labor down.
