Project Information

i am in the process of making a desk out of a section of salvaged bowling alley lane for my home studio. that project will likely be a very time consuming one, however, i have an immediate need for a desk. so, i decided to make an upcycled desk for the interim.

this desk is make from an old yellow pine drafting table (surface). the sawhorses are made from salvaged oak from wood palettes-i did not make these; i repurposed them from another piece of furniture that didn't work out so well. the desk top is attached to the sawhorse legs by old plumbing flanges. the metal brackets in the third and fourth pictures are pipe straps from the hardware store-they are to keep wires and cords neat and tidy.

the letterforms are all hand painted with black Behr paint, and hand distressed with various grit. the surface was then sealed with Aqua-ZAR clear antique flat polyurethane.

here are some of the images of the work in process :

thanks for the compliments folks, much appreciated! NOTE: the black paint used on this table is Behr Black Suede S-H-790. it produces a nice thick, heavy black in a matte finish.

@bch : i don't subscribe to DWELL, but have read several issues. would you recommend it, and why?
