Project Information

This is the second chair of this style that I have made.

The first chair - the spoon chair was a gift for my nephew. I liked the chair and decided to make one for myself, but have since decided to give it to a friend. The slender back design of the chair is inspired by Charles Rohlfs 1898 Desk Chair The back design is based on a cutlery pattern that I liked.

It is similar to the first chair with a few small changes. The legs on this chair are little different than the first version and the carving of the decorative banners is a little bit sharper and crisper. The chair is made from reused mahogany base board and door jambs salvaged from a home renovation project.

The mahogany was thickness planed and laminated or bent laminated together to make the various pieces. The decorative elements are walnut.

It is finished with Miniwax stain and then three coats of tung oil and buffed with dark wax.

What a beautiful and fantastic looking chair. I like the flowing curves and art nouveau style you used.
How comfortable is it?

Thanks for the comments. Actually it is reasonably comfortable. The back is curved to fit your back contour. Its no "East Boy" recliner but its as comfortable as any other wooden dining room chair.

Very elegant, indeed! And great job on re-purposing that mahogany-it would have been a shame to see it go into a landfill. Now you have a piece of furniture that will be handed down to your posterity.

You have a fantastic style of your own too Peter! Who would think a design in cutlery could be so successfully transferred to depict such beauty and style into a chair?! Well done!!

All that comes to mind is mind blowing. I love the design of the back and then The fact you built it from salvaged scraps, great.

Thanks for the kind comments.
Justoneof me: I spotted the spoon at the cottage were I suppose like many folks you have a whole draw full of mismatched cheap garage sale cutlery. I took about 20 pictures of different designs all of which lend themselves nicely to this type of high narrow back chair. I've got chair ideas for years to come.

Wonderful! I love the spoon, I love the chair. It's a great representation of the Art Nouveau style. Sometimes I find Art Nouveau a bit over done, but this is great.
