Project Information

Some of you may remember the Arkansas cherry table I posted a while back. This box is from the same carpenter ant infested logs. Dimensions:12×7x4 1/2". Pegged box joints. Live edge 'Shipwright' wooden hinge 3/8" thick. Finished with BLO and shellac. Large ant hole in the front filled with epoxy/Jatoba sanding dust. It is sitting on top of some freshly sawn mulberry and elm planks. Can't wait for that mulberry to dry!

Great looking box. I like the looks of the top, but I would have been afraid to use it for fear it will eventually come apart. With all of the interesting grain the box looks like it should have a story to tell.

Andy,

As usual you have managed to really bring out the beauty in the grain and pattern in the wood you have to work with. You have perfected the hinge. Do you have a special jig? Seems like I remember some kind of box joint jig you do this with. How do you figure how deep to cut the slot for the pin? What…no carving on this?

Great job andy, that box looks well made and sturdy. I love the idea of using our native timbers. Don't get me wrong, I love woods from all over the world and use them often in my projects , but I think that some of our native woods are under appreciated, yes I realize that cherry, along with maple and walnut from north america have been a staple in furniture making for centuries, but I believe that it does'nt have to come from Pennsylvania to be of usable quality. I've used these same species that grow right here in east texas , and haven't had a problem with quality. Anyway enough of my ranting. again great job.

Very cool I love seeing your boxes . You have probably done more of these hinges than Paul , not that it matters . I still have to finish one.

Big Al- I tried to post the link to Shipwright's blog on making these hinges but failed (as usual). Just go to his blogs and you'll find it. No jigs involved. Thanks for all the interest and nice comments guys. Those hinges are as addictive as boxes. And my apologies to Yorkshire Stewart who co-invented these hinges and deserves credit for at least part of my wooden hinge obsession.

Andy, another great box! I like alot of the detail on this one. It appears you put a wooded pin ( or small dowel ) into the box joints. does this go all the way down through all of them. I can see this wood make it really solid!

Great work.

I know I must like a piece when my first reaction is "dammit! I've got to get down to the shop today."

Well done.
