Project Information

A few "firsts" on this one. My first commissioned piece, my first time building a door, my first time working with white oak, and my first time having to deal with wood expansion. I've already had the doors taken down and returned to trim the edges. As I live in sunny, hot and humid Florida, I had previous added A/C to my attached 2-car shop by tapping into my A/C ducts. The wood had been in my shop for close to two months while building the doors. With-in the first two weeks of hanging the doors they expanded. I had built the doors with a 1/16" gap all the around. I ended up trimming an addtional 1/16" on the sides and 3/16" between the top and bottom. Since the trimming all is well. I keeping my fingers crossed though!

You did an amazing job. I love arched or circle top doors and yours is the best I've seen! You have raised the bar for the rest of us.

Looks good. I am building a screen door for a mansion right now. I used quartersawn white oak though, so I won't have to worry about expansion as much as flatsawn stock.

Thank you all for the nice comments.

I would have prefered to use quartersawn and if it would have been for myself I would have. The customer was more concerned with keeping the cost down.

I guess I should clarify that I built the frame and screen door as well. I added a "before" photo of what was there previously. Also, I took many pictures during the build. If anyone would care to view them I'll post them as well.
