Project Information

Okay this is a Grooving plane that I made out of Beech. The wedge is out of Walnut. It cuts a 1/4" groove about 1/2" up on the board. It's great for half blind dovetails when you need to get the groove inside the tail. The last pic is of a pair of Winding Sticks. They are made out of Bolivian Rosewood with hard maple inlays. These items were made and sent to my friend Bill in the surprise swap. I hope he gets plenty of use out of them, and I hope he likes them.

Excellent work josh! Is that just a cut off old chisel in there? If so, that's awesome. The beech looks fantastic too. What finish did you use?

Thanks Dave. It is an old chisel. I even left the little bolster on it when I cut it. I figured it would be great for the plane hammer. I finished with BLO and then Shellac.

Beauty Josh. You're just gonna keep it up until I use some of my Rosewood for another set of winding sticks huh? ;-)

I would have guessed shellac but wanted to be sure. Looks good on the beach, glad you didn't use amber shellac.

I've been thinking about a second, smaller set that's a little handier just for flattening boards. I don't NEED them but Josh's are so darned sexy… I dunno though, Eucalyptus with Citrus inlays would be mighty pretty too. Hmmmm.

You have enough of both to make some Kenny. Definitely a stable wood too.
