Project Information

Made this one for a friends first baby boy. I deviated from my usual design after inspiration from a shoe bench made by a fellow lumberjock Joe Dusel (you can find his shoe benches at woodistry.com). The original request was to make a toy box of contrasting color similar to the walnut version I made a few years ago (as in the last two pics). But it was later decided that it would all be stained dark. This isn't completed yet and I will post the completed pics in a few days. I guess I just couldn't wait to share. Joe if you are checking this out I hope you approve of my take on your design.

update The project is now completed and I have included finished pics (#1-3). The third pic shows part of my finger saving design. Instead of mortising the hinges into the box, I made these oak bumpers to hold the lid open an extra 1/8" at the front to match the space between the halves of the hinges as additional protection from having the little guys fingers pinched.

Very well done emetric.

The legs give this box a not so boxy look that looks great!. Just out of curiosity how are these legs attached? I see the two upper and lower horizontal trim boards, are these face framed into the legs also?

Nice job on that! I might have to make a couple of those myself. Thanks for posting the pix and giving me a shout-out.

That's a great little toy box. I'll bet it will be used a lot.
