Project Information

My second Tiki plane in New Zealand Kauri. The design is loosely based on the Maori Tiki and Canadian First Nations designs. It is quite small being about 150mm long and about 60 mm at the highest point on the body. It is a lovely worker and cuts beautifully fine shavings.

I don't know if its me, the wood or the design but I had a very frustrating time trying to get a good finish on the wood. It was very fibrous to cut and every little imperfection showed during sanding and scraping. The actual carving took about 6 hours and the finishing about 30 hours. Totally out of proportion to the value of the piece. In the end you just have to make a decision about how much to persevere. It now look OK but I would have liked more improvement. Being a sucker for punishment I have just started a new one in a very hard wood. That should at least eliminate one of the sources of the problem. My suspicion is that Kauri is great for large projects but hopeless for the Netsuke type work I do.

Kauri is a popular wood in NZ as it is considered to be iconic and is now becoming hard to find. Not my favourite for plane making but the customers prefer it to other local woods. Despite my criticisms the cutting action is great and if necessary I will be happy to have it as a "user" in my workshop.

I recently made my first plane, but it is no comparison to your beautiful work. Your planes are so very nice. Thanks for sharing them with us. It provides inspiration for the next one I might try to make.

Thank you all. Good to hear how others view it as I am too familiar with the details to be objective about the quality of my workmanship.

Spectacular plane John. Lots of hard work put into that. You did an awesome job and one day I might make my own plane . . . . . . . . . . one day.
