Project Information

A friend and co-worker gave me some very old "old growth" pine. He was renovating his pre-Civil War home and the boards had been put up, at some point, to wall off an area in the house.

Used the same pattern as the previous cradles (Woodsmith) and made all of the parts (except for the accents of Walnut) from the pine. Spindles were turned without the aid of any duplicating device.

The pine was extremely dry and brittle from years of heat in the home. It was also very soft. The boards were not planed and a lot of the beautiful patina was lost to the sizing operations. I was pleasantly surprised to see some of the original patina came back during finishing. No effort was made to hide nail holes, worm tunnels or other defects.

Finish is just several coats of clear, semigloss Minwax poly.

I imagine he will be a grandpa one of these days, so I hope it comes in handy.

Thanks for looking!

Excellent job and as someone said a work of art. Great job on turning all those spindles. Not sure I could make that many they still looks like the first one.
Do these sell for you or is this for friend or family?
