Project Information

I have reached the age where I am building things for my grandchildren. Here is a doll house I just completed for my granddaughter. It is all scratch built, no kit, and the size is smaller than the standard one inch per foot scale. The theme of the doll house is of a Bavarian type "enchanted" cottage. I referred to Walt Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' film of 1939 for inspiration for the carvings on the vertical and horizontal posts and beams of the house and the front door. I also made a replica of Dopey's organ that was played in the film. The front door needed the hinges from the front door of the seven dwarfs cottage. I made these from brass. The carved characters are dressed in 1900 era clothing. Due to the small size, the carvings and details were challenging to make and decorate. After all of the work invested in the project, I decided to make a protective box to store it in and also act as a viewing stand. All of the artwork is mine.

The following are the dimensions:

Doll House: 16" wide x 16" tall
Father figure: 4" tall
Mother figure: 3 5/8" tall
Boy figure: 2 3/4" tall
Girl figure: 2 1/2" tall
Dopey's Organ: 3 3/4" wide x 4 3/8" tall

Unbelievable! That's is an amazing project. I've been to Bavaria and seen the work done there. Yours far better than most that I saw. You have a fantastic talent.

Thanks guys!

I tried to make everything as unbreakable as possible. That is why the figures have their hands in their pockets. The chairs and table are all mortise and tenon assemblies. That took some time! The walls of the house and all items fitted to the house base including the little deer at the corner of the house and the bird house are either screwed in to the base from underneath or drilled and pegged in. I have a LOT of time in this thing!

Great project. Your excellent design(s) are well executed and would surely qualify as a true Masterpiece in the traditional sense. I hope your granddaughter realizes what a treasure you are giving her (of course YOU are the real treasure here…) and that it will be passed down to her children and grandchildren as evidence of what love can create.
