Showcase cover image for American Girl Bunk Beds

Project Information

Earlier this year I posted pictures of American Girl Bunk Beds that I had made for my granddaughter. I received several orders to make sets for other friends and family. One thing that I discovered was that my plan were very labor intensive and I was spending huge amounts of time measuring twice, cutting once (hopefully), drilling dowel rod holes, and painting. There was no question about it,,,, if I were going to make these bunkbeds and even hope to come close to breaking even on my time and costs, I would need to come up with a more efficient design.

After years of "thinking about it",, I finally bit the bullet one day and bought the Kreg pocket Jig that I have always thought would make life simpler. Wow! What a difference in the options I now had in doing wood joinery with out dowel pins, biscuits, etc. I came up with a pretty simple design, and then just used my Kreg Gig to create my pocket holes and join all the pieces together. For the decorative trim on the headboard, I picked up the cup rail at my local big box store, cut it to size and glued it on.

I can now build a nice set of American Girl Bunkbeds using only my table saw, drill, and Kreg Jig. I cannot believe how Kreg "uncomplicated" my life and made itonce again "fun" to crank out easy to build projects/

P.S. I still had to bribe my wife into making the little mattress pads from PolyFoam. I don't think I would even attempt to turn on her sewing machine - too complicated!
