Project Information

I have been seeing these online (usually just painted plywood) and figured that maybe I could make a better one for myself. All is reclaimed/recycled hardwood pallet lumber, only the hardware is new. The paint was thinned acrylic so it would act more like a stain than paint. Then I sanded it lightly and antiqued with a poly / stain mixture wiped on, sanded lightly, and sprayed with satin polyurethane. The flag is completely to government scale at 48" X 26". The cabinet is 4" from front to back, with the interior at 2.25" deep. It took about five days start to finish. Now that I know what is involved, I can probably cut that time way down. Still waiting on the foam inserts for the firearms, but the project is done.

Very cool cabinet…..........for storage of simple things.
Not sure I can agree with keeping firearms in such an easily accessible cabinet.

Looks good. Did you make or buy a template for the stars?

I made the stencil. I also cut vinyl so stencils come cheap.

I cut vinyl too. Did you have any trouble with it sticking to the paint?

I didn't put on enough paint to worry about it peeling. I thinned the paint so much it was more of a stain. It soaked-in to the pores of the wood enough that it would not peel off.

What program do you use for vinyl? If it is compatible with what I use, then I can send you the template for the stars. They are to scale with government regulations.
