Project Information

Over the summer I built a cherry and maple bed frame, the next item on the list was a pair of matching bedside tables, next is a dresser. I wanted to give the tables and dressers some flair so I decided to use Ambrosia Maple for the tops and straight maple veneer on the drawer fronts.

I wanted a somewhat modern version of the classic Shaker / Arts & Crafts style end tables. I think the final result is pretty good.

The cherry was stained with 235 Cherry Miniwax. On the Ambrosia top and bottom I applied Spar Urethane since I am sure drinks will get rested on them. For the drawer front, inside, outside I used a clear satin poly. Sanded with 320 between coats - 3X. Applied finishing wax on all of the cherry once the stain was dry. Also, applied wax to the drawer sliders and rails.

A couple things I am proud of /features in this project:
  • First time using the lathe and I think the pulls came out pretty good, and mostly identical
  • My dovetail skills are getting better (thanks Rob Cosman, your videos are fantastic & the rest of YouTube)
  • I used just about all the Ambrosia that I had, including making inlays on the inside of the drawers - I mean why not no one sees it
  • I created my own table top fasteners for the front portion of the table top since the metal ones I typically use were too large in that area
  • The bottoms of each drawer are veneered in maple

Thanks for looking and any comments.
