Project Information

Here are 3 different Ambrosia Maple and Bubinga wine boxes I created as gifts for this past Christmas. The wife loves color so she got the orange stained one and our son and daughter each got my favorite look of all natural. The sides, top and bottom are Ambrosia Maple, the ends are Bubinga and the handle is a combination of both. The dowel pins are 1/4" walnut. All three were sanded to 220 grit and finished with 3 coats of Watco Danish Oil.

To be honest, only one of them ever contained a bottle of wine and that was to our daughter. All three are now being used as personal "memory" storage boxes.

Man, do I love Ambrosia Maple! Its so easy to work with, has the look of being highly figured without the headaches and looks stunning with an oil finish.

Love the ambrosia maple! Also, I really like the way you shaped the handles.

Thanks helluvawreck and Courtney! There were a fun little project. All made with 1 wide 6/4 plank. One of the best $24 I've ever spent on wood.

Very well done. I just might have to steal these designs.

Thanks blade! Steal away! I borrowed the design a Wood magazine article. The article called for a rounded top and bottom which render the box unable to stand up. It also called for a band saw so even if I wanted to, it would have been tricky for me to cut the curve since all I have is a jig saw. Not the best when you want to cut through a 5" thick board.

Here's a link to the original plans from Wood Mag's online store: http://www.woodstore.net/giwibox.html

BTW, Grizzly confirmed my new jointer should have shipped from MO today. Not sure when the drop off date is through. Thanks again for that coupon code. :)
