Project Information

This is a piece of Alaskan birch burl.

The burl was cut green here in the Alaskan MatSu. It was a very large piece of wood and even after five years of drying in the burl pile, it was still very wet inside when I cut it into several large turning blanks. This piece was turned wet to rough, allowed to dry for another six months or so, and then turned to finish. I had intended it to sit on a small flat foot, but after seeing the grain, I wanted it elevated a bit so that you could see the opalescence and spectacular figure - so I added a small walnut base. The piece is finished in natural walnut oil. It's about 14" in diameter.

Nice! Are you putting it in the Artistry in Wood show? Today is the last day to drop off entries at the Northway Mall - regular mall hours.

Tony, Argh! I forgot all about that. No way I can get into Anchorage today. Oh well, there's always next year.

This is beautiful, I love the patterns you uncovered! I hope you have a bowl saver to save the inside of the bowl, if not, it is a tool worth investing in.

Bearpie, I do have a couple different types of bowl savers and nested bowl cutters, but in this case I didn't bother.
