Project Information

This is my first attempt at airbrushing a turned piece. The hollow form vase was turned from end grain Tree of Heaven wood. It measures 3.25" wide by 6.25" tall. I dyed it with an overall yellow aniline dye, airbrushed red and blue aniline dyes, sprayed 5 coats of lacquer, rubbed in black tinted wax and finished with Briwax. Although this piece is far from being perfect, I see great potential with the airbrush. Who knows, some day I may combine all my experiments into one piece and have something. What, I'm not sure, but something.

just wondering, what's your day job? If it's not this (which i don't think it is, you seem like a well rounded logical fellow, and as we know anyone trying to go into this as a business especially these days has gotta be crazy =)) I'm surprised by how quickly you get through these, especially with all the different layers you're doing….your turnings are as professional as they come, they sing to my eyes every time i take a quick glance at the new projects…its a real inspiration cuz every piece just keeps getting better and better!

Thats great Joe, I think the color is beautiful, and your start with the air brush is on a good note. I wonder what your using for an airbrush? I have an Iwata brand that will produce down to a human hair and up to 1/2 inch wide. But for this type of work a Pasche VL would be better, both are dual action airbrushes. I notice your getting a lot of questions in the other comments about it. I want to send you a picture of a ceramic vase I have, I think it would give you some ideas to try that you'll like. Talk with you soon, great job!!!!

Dan, I ended up purchasing the Paasche VL. It is a fairly basic set complete with 3 needles and tips, color cup, 2 color jars, a holder, and the air hose. Iwata make some great airbrushes too. I picked mine up from Dick Blick while visiting family last weekend.

Chris, my day job is sales and marketing for a marketing innovations and printing company. Turning and finishing just seam to come quickly and naturally to me. This piece took about 3-4 hours from start to finish.

Joe, this is another gorgeous piece. I remain amazed at your level of expertise and the different styles that you are able to accomplish given the relatively short time that you have been turning.

Very, very cool Joe! Another whole new dimension. Simply beautiful. Like Scott, I continue to be amazed at how quickly your turning has developed. You have a real gift.

Very nice, and elegant. Turning is the only forte of woodworking that I have never delved into. One of these years I will break down and purchase a lathe to try it out. Beautiful stuff.

Thanks for all the kind remarks, I appreciate them all. Although this is not one of my better pieces, I see some great potential with airbrushing aniline dyes.
