Project Information

So I was scrolling through old photos, trying to organize pictures of my recent home renovation and stumbled upon this project that I forgot to post from last year. HA! I sometimes wonder how many of my projects DON'T make it to LJs just because I forget to take photos or simply don't have time to post them.

Anyhow, this project was born out of necessity. Last year, I had multiple students who wanted to make the same adirondack bench that I posted here for their final project. The original plans that I purchased from Rockler came with a set of cardboard templates that were folded up and shoved into a small cardboard box. Well after several uses, the students put a real hurting on the templates' edges, and some got ripped and one was even lost. I knew something had to be done so this is what I came up with.

I traced the cardboard templates and cut them out of a piece of 1/2" thick MDF board. once all pieces were cut, sanded, and labeled, I laid them out onto a 48"x 48" piece of plywood. After drilling strategic holes into each piece, I partially screwed some drywall screws into the sheet of plywood so they had a way to hang. After a few coats of leftover yellow paint from this project , I was able to trace out each template.

Before mounting it to the wall, I decided to add a secret compartment to keep the packet of plans so they would be out of sight(picture 3). I came up with the crude frame shown in picture 4, and used toggle bolts to mount it to the wall. The plywood was then easily mounted to the frame.

last 2 pictures are of some past students who completed this project too.

I love these kinds of organizational projects. A place for everything, and everything in its place!

Thanks for looking, and as always questions/comments/concerns/complaints are all welcome!

Thanks Hoss, once you get in that bench it is really hard to get back out of… especially when you have a cold one on the armrest!

Jim Thanks for the kind words, I always love when a student takes home a piece like these.

Those adirondack chairs look very comfortable Tooch! I like how you reworked the templates and hung them up out of the way. Those students will never forget you!

Now that's a perfect solution for future students to be able to share the plans. Must work great, their chairs look nice.

Tooch, I am sure there will be lots of chairs made from this pattern. It is a superb job of organization and the students and parents should be aptly impressed when they enter the shop. Shoot, I am impressed just with the pictures. Carry on and keep up the good fight. Thanks for sharing.

What is the best way to protect the msg patters from high humidity. Can it be painted with a sealer without distorting the template?

Nathan I bought my plans from Rockler , that link should take you to the site .

Ray I never thought of protection from humidity, mostly because it is kept in a temperature controlled area. I suppose any sealer or top coat would work… the templates aren't that precise where a couple thousandths would throw off the project
