Project Information
A friend, and fellow Lumberjock, JL7, recently sent me some beautiful wood. Actually, it's exotic woods compared to what I usually get to work with. So when I opened the package and seen some beautiful lacewood and birdseye maple, I had to come up with a special project for it. My special lady, my wife, wanted a lamp. So that's what I started on.
To start with, I planned a simple lamp. Then I decided to scrap those plans. This was going to made with special wood, for a special lady, so I had to fancy it up a bit.
The lamp body is made of sapelle with lacewood panels. While making it, I decided to make the top in twelve pieces instead of one. I laid several pieces of wood on the top of the assembled center section and decided that no straight piece of wood would do. So I done the top you see in the fourth photo. It's my first time doing anything that precise. With the help of my Incra sled, I was happy with the results.
The shade is made of sycamore with birdseye maple panels. I thought of several different designs here too. In the end though, I decided to make something that matched, but with contrasting color.
The finish is three coats of Watco Danish Oil. On top of that is three coats of Minwax Gloss Polyurethane. Then I applied Johnson's Paste Wax and buffed it.
