Project Information

A friend, and fellow Lumberjock, JL7, recently sent me some beautiful wood. Actually, it's exotic woods compared to what I usually get to work with. So when I opened the package and seen some beautiful lacewood and birdseye maple, I had to come up with a special project for it. My special lady, my wife, wanted a lamp. So that's what I started on.
To start with, I planned a simple lamp. Then I decided to scrap those plans. This was going to made with special wood, for a special lady, so I had to fancy it up a bit.

The lamp body is made of sapelle with lacewood panels. While making it, I decided to make the top in twelve pieces instead of one. I laid several pieces of wood on the top of the assembled center section and decided that no straight piece of wood would do. So I done the top you see in the fourth photo. It's my first time doing anything that precise. With the help of my Incra sled, I was happy with the results.

The shade is made of sycamore with birdseye maple panels. I thought of several different designs here too. In the end though, I decided to make something that matched, but with contrasting color.

The finish is three coats of Watco Danish Oil. On top of that is three coats of Minwax Gloss Polyurethane. Then I applied Johnson's Paste Wax and buffed it.

William, As I said on the other thread: I love it! You certainly made excellent use of some amazing wood. It's almost a combination lamp/end table and the "table" part is a woodworking masterpiece (even if you cheated a little with that Incra thingy). The whole thing is a thing of beauty.

You did it up right William - your special lady will surely appreciate all the effort! The finish turned out quite "special" as well….....you forgot to mention the coffee filters? You should also mention your son helped out with some of the geometry so kind of a family effort…...nicely done.

Thank you all for your compliments.

Jeff, I didn't mention the coffee filters, did I? Maybe it's because I didn't want everyone thinking I was crazy. Oh well, I guess it's too late for that.
In between coats, after hitting it with fine sandpaper, I buff it with coffee filter. I have found the coffee filters are extremely fine, but rough enough for a sanding effect. This creates an ultra fine finish. The proof is in the top in the fourth photo. It looks wet doesn't it? I assure you that the photo was taken after it had dried for over twenty four hours. So it was plenty dry.

gfadvm, Incra isn't cheating. If it is, then let's tell everyone I cut the pieces with a rusty hand saw. We wouldn't want anyone thinking I was a cheater.

Dave, I aint even sure what "bling" means, but thank you anyway.

David, she was pleased. I thought she was placing this on her dresser. Instead, it is on her nightstand, right beside the bed. She says she likes the glow the light reflect off the darker wood and thinks it would make a better bedside lamp.

Randy, thank you.

In linguistics terms, bling is an ideophone intended to evoke the "sound" of light hitting silver, platinum, or diamonds. It is not an onomatopoeia, because the act of jewelry shining does not make a sound.

No problem Mark.
As for the shade, maple didn't do well for me for the effect I was looking for. Softer woods I can slice thin enough for a soft glow of light to shine through them. The harder maple crumbled when I tried to get it that thin. That's just something I thought I'd give you to think about. I may build another one in the future out of softer wood that will allow that glow I was looking for.

Thanks for the tips William. I'm definitely intimidated by attempting to make shades like that. I believe they are light years beyond my skill. The base and lamp shade frame, I feel a little better about.
