Project Information

I'm new here and thought it appropriate to offer one of my pieces for the scrutiny of my peers. It's a small jewelry box made from walnut and holly. I am especially proud of the hinges which I made myself from walnut. It was my first attempt at making them (no, I did not make the handles. They are are Lowes cabinet handles).

I would be very glad to hear any comments from you all as I am always trying to improve my work. By the way, the photo is just a reduction, for web, from project sheets I try to do for each of my pieces. Thanks ahead of time for any comments.

Is that "checker board" piece (tray?) all inlay work, or are the circles recessed spots for rings and such? Hard to tell from the size of the picture, Tbe box is gorgeous. Nice design work on the project sheet as well.

Very nice Chip. We also have a show and Tell at the woodworkers club. This would be a nice piece to show off.

Chips, this is a beautiful piece. How about more detail? I'd particularly like a few close-up shots of the hinges and a description of how they were made.

Very nice. I can't tell from the pictures, how did you attach the hinges?

Another great project, the combination of the wood is pleasing to the eye. The joinery is superb. I'd like to see some larger images though.

Great piece. I'm very interested in the hinges. Are they made like rounded over box joints? If so do you have to make them looser to allow for better movement?

thanks for the comments.

Dick - Thanks for your kind words. I replaced the old pics with bigger ones. This was my first project posted here and back then I wasn't sure how big a pic could be downloaded.

Iclashley - There are kits for doing these out there. I studied the kit, priced the router bits seperately and put together a jig which was cheaper. The extra long 1/8" drill bit was probably the hardest thing to find. The Incra (?) kit has great step by step pics which is what I went by. I have the address here someplace and will try to find it for you. Thanks a lot for your comments and for taking a look.

Super nice. The wood contrasts, joinery, every thing fits. The tray construction is especially cool.

Chip! I missed this one. I got caught up in examining your other box. The hinge is brilliant! I really like the contrast in woods, and your detail with the insert is most impressive. I have trouble with final touches like this. It is really quite an inspiring piece of work!

Much appreciated Tom. Like I was telling you, I have a few others on the burner but just can't get the time to finish them. Perhaps during the holidays (right, that'll happen). Thanks for the comment.

Very handsome box, Chip. The lines work really well with the proportions.

Thanks for the comment Oscar. From the look of your woodworking, any jewelry box you do would come out great. I'm sure your wife would love it too. Thanks again!

wreck, thank you kindly.

Chip, I'm not exactly sure what happened here. I thought that I went to one of Oscars projects but went to yours by mistake and commented on it thinking that it was Oscars. Then when I realized that it was yours I changed my comment to reflect that. You do very good work, Chip. The box is beautiful.
