Project Information

Canes and walking sticks are my projects of choice. The first is a oak cane I got at a flea market and carved the angle. The second is a walnut cane I am putting dogwood flowers on. The third has a Mahogany handle and walnut shank. The forth has a zebrawood handle with a padauk shank. The fifth one is a mahogany handle with a canarywood shank.

They all look great, but the carvings really make them special for me.

I've always wanted to try making a cane. I only have a very small jet lathe and It doesn't give me enough room to turn the shaft. Your comment about grabbing one at a flea market is something I never thought of.

All look great but the one with the dogwood flowers really caught my eye.

For a cane, especially the "handle" part, what is your finish of choice? Given all the contact, I'm guessing something durable, but not slick.

CV3,

The dogwood and Zebra Wood ones are my favorites. All are great and well done.

Those are beautiful! How do you join the handle to shaft? I was thinking of making one for my dad but I was afraid it wouldn't be strong enough and would more dangerous than no cane at all.
