Project Information

I was asked by Canadian Home Workshop Magazine to build "something for the kitchen", but seeing as how I detest plywood, I decided to do a butcher block…..but butcher blocks are kinda boring…...so I "spiced it up" :)

The mother of all cutting boards I think! 24X36 X 4.5" thick endgrain cherry/maple/walnut on a solid cherry base.

The joinery:

About 900 butt joints….the single most difficult glue up I have ever done…..just that top took close to 100 hours

16 mortise and tennons, cut with the FMT and splined. 8 of them on the "Y" axis….tricky :)

144 3/8" holes with 72 dowels

Thanks very much for looking :)

Hey! I've seen this design before! Wait, it was yours! :)

Ryan, couple of questions:

1. Will you be cutting all the parallelograms at the show?
2. Will the build span all three days?

Thanks! Hope to see you there!

Hey Charlton.

I'm building a simpler version at the show (checkerboard) as there is no way to get my own tools to the show….and I don't have an extra two days to tune whatever machines I end up using :) Besides, I only have three days…

I will have sample pieces there though as well as a full photo show cycling through on the computer showing the steps.

Thanks everyone,

R

Great build. The top speaks for itself. The wedged tenons are a great touch….I like them a lot. Great job.

Hey, thanks everyone….I appreciate the feedback.

jayjay~I dunno….somewhere between "grunting and cursing" and "hernia". I'm guessing in the 250 lb range anyway. It's all I can do to lift the top off and get it on to my bench.

Very nice build! I like the way you worked the base in, Balances the thick top nicely.
