Project Information

The first time I had to make a mantel like this was definitely out of necessity. I needed the work and told the customer I could make anything she wanted! Turns out, that it was a good BS line, because she gave me the opportunity and I learned a lot. Since then we've built about a dozen mantels similar to these two. The carvings are the only part to these mantels we did not make. They're made from some kind of composite, and they're great for any type of furniture. I got them from a place called decorator supply. The mantel legs we made ourselves using a number of jigs, band saw, oscillating sander and some routers. It took a little time to figure out how to make them but through trial and error and an issue of Fine Woodworking on cutting Queen Anne style legs on the band saw, I succeeded. Hey Thanks for all the nice comments, Building mantels is where I caught the woodworking bug! My Pop used to make me sit on a bucket and stare at fireplace until I built it in my head first. I guess it worked!
