Project Information

I liked it so much I made one and have added it to my collection of Christmas products.

This board is almost the same as Dan's, but the Wenge is replaced by Jatoba (that is one heavy, hard and dense wood {SG 95}) - The dimensions are a little Wider at 16" x 10 1/4" x 1 1/8". I added an additional 4 verticle sections

Nearly all the work was done with the table saw and planer, and a touch of sanding here and there just to make things fit properly.

I sanded it all down to 240g and the finish is my special blend of oils and wax (5 coats) each coat rubbed out with 0000 steel wool..

I only placed it on my website this morning and already have two offers for it.

That is a sharp board. Nice work. It dosn't surprise me that it sold that fast. When I thought someone would copy that design I didn't think it would have been that fast!

You have to strike whilst the iron is hot - I have declined to sell it at the moment - I made it for a "Demonstrator" to show my commercial customers.

I see how many are ordered in the next few weeks, then I'll make a batch of them - it will keep my prices and costs lower.

Another great cutting board!

This is one of the benefits of LumberJocks - we get to see designs like this and also get construction details.

Great work Tony, and congratulations on the sale. I hope you get lots of orders for these, as they look wonderful.

Did you use lap joints for the boards?

Wayne: I'm not certain How long the construction took - The minutes merge into hours which merge into years. I would guess for the Glue up and the sanding and smoothing about a 8 working hours - the time from start to finish, including the Oil and Way treatment 4 days.

Bill: No lap joints Bill, it was bad enough to make them with butt joints - Lots of Polyurethane…..

Great looking project !! I've been looking for some Holly to put in place of the wenge. Thinking it would look cool too, but Jatoba is a nice contrast. White Birch may look good too. Maybe maple. Guess the combinations are limitless. Have fun making them. I know I did !

The Jatoba is a really difficult wood to work - it is so hard - thank goodness for machines.

I keep trying to get some exotics here, even Holly is exotic for us - I have to take a walk through the parks here and see if I can find some imported trees that are going to be felled or trimmed, maybe I can get some offcuts.

Cutting Board challenge - now that is a good idea - It will put a lot of the beginners on the same level as the more experienced woodworkers, we will see a lot of creative designs I am sure.

I love the idea of a cutting board challenge. It would probably motivate me to get off my butt and build one. I've been wanting to, but you know how that goes. The only problem with a cutting board challenge… it could turn into a "who can find the best wood" challenge. The wood species chosen seem to have a huge impact in the final product. I'm still up for it.

Very nice looking cutting board. It's too bad someone's going to take a knife to them!

Joshua - you made a valid point about who can get the nicest wood - Exotic woods for me are difficult to find here in Finland, I do not have the same possibilities as other countries.

I think that there a lot of very creative and talented artisans out there who will make some beautiful projects without using exotics.

So I have set myself a challenge, to remake this board, with the stock I have in the shop using native European woods only - let's see what it turns out like.

I agree with Lee…. I couldn't bear to let anyone take knife to that!

I bet your "native" board will look great too Tony. I think it is partly the colors (different woods), and also partly the design as well. That woven look will still be a big draw as long as you find contrasting woods to work with. If you see a weave pattern, then it will be one people want.

I bet Obi is already looking for some left over hickory for his cutting board.

The alternaive board is in the clamps, just waiting for the glue to dry. The second one was a lot easier than the first.

You are correct Bill - it is more the colour contrast than having something exotic - you will all have to wait until tomorrow to see the finished item (only 1 coat of oil before the photoshoot!!!!!)
