Project Information

I was asked to make a cajon for someone. They liked my price and I duid the deed. My cajons are made from a quarter sheet of 1/2 in. plywood, using just about every scrap of the wood. The tympan panel is made from thinner plywood, ideally 1/8 inch or there abouts. For this one i had a convenient drawer bottom that was thin enough.

The snare inside is a snare drum wire which I cut in two to give me a set of two.

I have a very detailed set of plans I use to make these.

It basically shows me the cut from the sheet of plywood and where to cut the rabbets for putting the thing together. I need to adjust the measurements gecause the plywood I buy is 1/4 in. shorter in one dimension now.

I stained the tympan piece with red mahogany stain and finished the body with several coats of polyurethane. Brass screws hold the tympan on. This instrument gained the approval of my musician wife, so I know for sure I did well. This is only the fourth full size cajon I've made.

Can I copy those highly detailed plans?
Never having built one it looks interesting.
I guess it must sound OK since your musical partner said you did well!

Copy away! It's just basically notes to myself, the rest is memory. You may want to research cajons generally if you want to build one. There's no one standard kind. Some have the hole in the back like mine or on the side, the hole size and height can vary as well.
