Project Information

Here's some more pens I made. Top row is acrylics, bottom row is wood. Top row from left to right is plastic, plastic, plastic, plastic… well, you get the idea. Bottom row from left to right is Cocobolo, Panga-Panga, Double-dyed Buckeye Burl, Padauk, Bloodwood, Cocobolo, Panga-Panga. I actually made more but already gave them away.

Nice job on the pens, Ted. You have been busy. Between work and pen turning, when do you sleep?

Gary, I make pens but soon I'll be using that spare time for bigger turnings. Tomorrow I will retrieve a larger lathe I won on ebay.

Randy, I hate writing! ;-)

Monte, I considered posting each one as a separate project. :D

Candy, I happened into the Panga-Panga a couple of years ago. It tends to be worm eaten at the white sap wood… wish I still had more of that. It's similar to Wenge, might be related but not sure about that. Turning acrylics for the most part is pretty easy. Only annoying thing is it doesn't make shavings like wood… it makes stringy stuff that wraps around the arbor, which I have to keep stopping to pull it off. But I think the little extra effort is worth the nice results.

Don, what is this "sleep" thing you speak of? I'd like to try it some time.

Jim, I do plan on setting up an online store some day soon. But I'm still practicing at this point. For now, I give away pretty much everything I make.

CD, I'm hoping to get $35 to $85 depending on the pen. But keep in mind that I'm not really into selling them… just gotta do something with them so why not sell them? In other words, if they don't sell at the asking price, I won't be torn up about it. I have other plans for my retirement income. Investment is about $10 to $30 plus average about 45 minutes per pen.

Nice pens!

Top row, 4th from the left, is that some kind of sleeve that rides on top of the pen blank?

I guess bottom row, 6th from the left, same question!

You must have a lot of mugs on your counter holding pens like me, except I didn't make any of mine and yours look better.

copcarcollector, be careful…. it's an addictive hobby. ;)

Arlin, I almost hate to admit it since this is a "woodworking" hobby, but I actually like the acrylics a little more. As much as I love the wood pens, there are only so many woods that work well on such a small scale. Acrylics seem to be an endless variety of colors and patterns to work with.

Mike… yep, way addictive. :D

Bill, maybe I should start turning mugs to fill with pens. :)
