Showcase cover image for A box worthy of the gift from my daughter

Project Information

[Legebla en Esperanto]

Some years ago my little daughter gave me a Christmas gift that she bought at school. It was a perfect present for me, and it demonstrated true thoughtfulness on her part. Somehow I knew that I was destined to make this project one day. Very recently that day arrived.

I arranged the parts of the kit on a piece of scrap wood to determine where things would go and how big it needed to be. I traced the handle and cut it out using my scroll saw. Then I drilled holes to hold the various bits and sockets. The little socket extension needed a slot cut into the wood. I made this by measuring carefully, keeping my wits about me and using the router table to create the slot.

Originally I intended to build a hinged, lidded box around this tray, but the wood I cut to do that ended up to not be tall enough. After thinking for short while I decided to put a lipped bottom on the tray and make the 'box' into a removable lid. The top panel is clear plastic. I finished the wood with boiled linseed oil.

Sitting inside a cabinet, I've never thought to use these tools. Perhaps now I will.

My daughter is now 17 and learning to drive. This coming fall she'll be off to college. I'll miss her.

Custom box to display the thoughtful gift from your daughter. Great job, both of you! I really like the clear top. Now, USE it (the tool, that is)!

Great box set up for your daughter's gifted tool! I like how you took the time to cut out the molded area for the handle to sit-nice touch!

By the way, I haven't heard anything about the boomerang project-did I miss something?!

I have put it on a shelf with my other wrench-shaped objects. I can see it now, so I'm more likely to pull it down and use it. It's definitely not something one can use to bust loose frozen screws or bolts.

Boomerang project is sleeping. Maybe in the spring I'll give it another go. I still think the arms were just too short.

Great story and sentiment to go with the project. It's amazing how fast they grow up.

That's the way how tools should be treated, nice compartments for each part.. Once, my boys gave me screwdriver as birthday present and they realy ''hit the target'' with it.

I have a small tap and die set that I got for Christmas once. I need to make a custom box for it as well. The plan is in my head. I just need to DO it.

That's a great display case. Another benefit is that you turned it into "art", so you can still say you are using it without actually having to use it. The quality of tools that you can get at the school functions is usually not that great. You wouldn't want to break them.
