Project Information

Finished my 2nd guitar body build! It is an extended range 8 string guitar body made out of solid quartersawn bubinga with a small diagonal wenge accent. This was a remnant I had left over from my coffee table I built a few years ago. I had always planned to turn it into a guitar body and I finally got around to doing it.

This body took me a VERY long time to sand and contour. As some of you know bubinga is extremely hard, dense, and heavy. I went at it with 60 grit for a very long time in order to shape it and spent a lot of time going up the grit chain at the end. The overall guitar is very heavy but I made it for recording studio work so I will never be standing around holding it on a strap. Guitar is finished with 2 coats of Sealcoat Shellac and 4 layers of General Finishes High Performance Polycrylic.

As for the technical specs for anyone who is interested in guitar stuff….
CTS 500k pots
Hipshot 8 string bridge
Hipshot String Ferrules
Bare Knuckle Pickups Aftermath bridge (Custom hand wound from the UK)
Bark Knuckle Pickups Cold Sweat neck (Custom hand wound from the UK)

I am currently working on the neck so expect to see a finished product sometime in the future. Thanks for looking as always!

Looks great, bubinga is heavy wood should give you great sustain, what strings are above or below the E strings in relation to the six string Guitar?

Thanks guys!

The two extra strings are larger and extend the range lower. They are sometimes referred to as extended range guitars for that very reason. It adds a B string and an even lower F# string to the mix and also allows you to create all kinds of crazy tuning styles.

Nice work, Russell. I want to hear some sound clips when you're done. I bet those BKPs will sound incredible in that body.

Thanks Mark! I am trying to finish up the neck right now. I so badly want to hear what this thing is going to sound like in the end. Plugged it in and tapped all the magnets in the pickups in different switch positions so at least I know I did the wiring right. I will be going with 11-85 for my string gauge setup.
