Project Information

Being a stay at home dad takes a lot of time away from my shop, as many of you have noticed by my absence of late. I made time for this contest though. I really liked the theme.

Some of you old timers might remember the Summer 2007 contest where I entered this project:

Well, some of those joints inspired this picture frame but with a twist, or should I say a circle?

After just having finished my curio cabinet for my wife, I had just a little over two weeks to come up with something if I wanted to have an entry for this contest. I haven't build anything for or entered one of the contests for 2 years, so I figured I would "chip" in again.

Starting at the top are couple Japanese flavored joints. Top center is what I would call a rabbeted scarf joint. On either side of that I would call it a mortise and tenon with square pegs to hold it together. Below on both sides of that are one of my favorite joints, a pin and crescent joint.

Then for good measure I made up the bottom one. It is two overlapping circles joined with finger joints.
It didn't turn out like I wanted it to. You really can't see the circle on the right side.

The two major woods are Holly and Madrone. I used walnut for the square pegs to contrast both woods.
The reason for those woods is the contrast and the nature of the wood. They both hold a nice clean edge when using a chisel, and a fine grain.

It's about 10" in diameter and 6.5" inside. One hard part was cutting a round piece of glass!

The biggest problem I encountered was after getting one joint perfect, was screwing up the other joint, scrapping
the whole part. I won't tell you how many times I did that!

My only regret is that I didn't take any progress pictures. (Let my brother borrow the camera, bummer!)

THAT is really neat. Great idea, and knowing you, giving up would be the Last thing you'd do. They look perfect.

Gary, I think this is the most creative entry I have seen from anyone, in a very long time.

Nice job!

oh I was SO hoping you'd enter this Awards event.
Now THIS is "joinery art".

And that last picture-really shows off its beauty :)

Extraordinary Gary. I guess we'll have to wait for your second one to see the progress photos - it must have been EXTREMELY challenging to design and to build.

two thumbs up!

Cripes Gary. That is just incredible.

Sorry, but you are going to have to recreate some of how you did this. It is not fair to tease us with the "I didn't have a camera" excuse :)

Very nice Gary. I was hoping someone would do a simple project with innovative use of joinery just like this.
Very nice work.

This is what the contest is about. To encourage others to think outside the box by viewing the Best. All I can say is wow.

Good to hear from you Gary. The site has been missing your artistry. As usual beautiful work. Don't stay away to long.

Very nice! I'm assuming that the "pegs" (some square, some round) are added after the joint is made, more or less as inlay, but I haven't a clue how you did the joint at "12-O'Clock". We'll just have to take it as a puzzle!

Virtually every time I look at a project I ask myself, "How did he/she make that?" Usually it is quite obvious. This project really has me scratching my head.

This is very impressive. I will state as a fact that I could not do this.

Thanks for sharing and mystifying.

Outstanding project Gary. Unfortunately your beautiful workmanship pales in comparison to the beautiful little girl in the photo.
I would think that your entry will be the winner.

Wow Gary !! That's some excellent work you've done here. I've always admired so much the ability of these kinds of joints, and they're so strong too. Great work bud.
