Project Information

My wife runs a furniture refinishing business out of her home. She basically finds older dressers cheap and repaints them to resell. She had a client that was looking for a cubbie bookcase system that she had seen in a Pottery Barn magazine. I offered to make a version of it.

The "fun" part of this came in that they wanted it with a thick/bulky wood. I thought of using a bunch of 2×12's to get the desired effect and to keep it fairly cheap. Also since they wanted it painted, I saw no point in using a nicer wood on the cases.

The bottom section is 21" deep while the top is 14" deep so I used a series of lap joints join the wood together. The shelves on the top cubbie are held up using dado joints. The result is the above picture with my wife's handywork on the painting and distressing of the bookcase.
