Project Information

First off, let me give full credit to fellow Lumberjock "Heavy" (http://lumberjocks.com/Heavy) and his post on how to make your own bentwood ring (http://lumberjocks.com/projects/91767). I don't know how to "tag" him in the project, if anyone else could, I would love for him to see my first attempts by following his videos.

So, I ordered a sample pack of veneer from Woodcraft and I'd say it was a great deal. There are a ton of different types of woods included. The only down side is I don't know exactly what they all are since they aren't labeled. So with these three rings, I'm not 100% sure what they are. If anyone has thoughts I'd love to know! My only guess is the 3rd ring to be walnut, but not sure.

Anyway, if you have questions or comments, I'd love to hear them. I had a lot of fun making these as they weren't too time consuming and for first try, they turned out really cool. I kept the 3rd for myself and have been wearing it for a couple weeks now. The first two I made for my female boss that a coworker asked me to make for her birthday, so I tried adding her name inside the light wood ring, and it didn't quite transfer as well as some of my past work, but it'll do. She loved them regardless.

As for strength, it's crazy how well the superglue enhances it. Both in the structural rigidity of them. I tried pinching them as hard as I could, and they show no sign of bending/breaking. And as far as the exterior, in the week or two Ive been wearing it, I see no scuff or scratching/wear and tear whatsoever yet. So far so good!

It was also a great learning experience to see how well some of the wood bent compared to others. The first ring actually turned out the best (Surprisingly) because it did bend much easier. The 2nd and 3rd weren't as easy and almost wanted to crack or split, but the glue proved to be too strong of a bond to let that happen thankfully!

Hope you enjoy looking at them and tell me what you guys think! Thanks!

Nice work. I've turned a few rings, but have yet to try the bentwood style. It's on my todo list…
