Project Information
I finished this workbench over a month ago but wanted to get familiar with it before I posted it here. Today I put the second coat of BLO on it and decided to take some pictures and thoughts. Overall I am quite happy with my choices as there were no plans but just dimensions that fit my needs. Choices were made as I thought thru the steps.
The red oak was purchased from an old farmer that had been stacked up in a field for several years or more. The wood had bugs and spalting but the way it was cut was good and straight and some quartersawn grain. The price was $80. The legs are full 5 1/2" square finished cut clear of the pith. The top slabs finished out @ 3 5/8 thick and I glued on 5 1/2" face boards to be able to slip a clamp around for the need if it arised.
I used Benchcrafted hardware for the leg vise and laminated a 2 3/4" chop, for the end vise I used my old quick release Wilton vice and mounted 2" maple chops to the faces. The deadman was made from an old white oak plow yoke and the peg pattern just appeared out of the blue or a dream of sorts, ha, just an offbeat idea but work great.
My original idea was for a removable center divider for a planing stop and tool holder but I decided on making two 15" sliding dividers, 1
1/4" and they can be slid sideways or taken aside fo using clamps between slabs. Thanks for taking a look. All the Best Jeff
