Project Information

My recipient this year was Dave Kelley (LJ: KelleyCrafts). The design is from an old issue of Wood Magazine. There is a name for this type of glue up but I can't remember it. Lines were burned with pieces of Formica which I prefer over wire. I made a matching awl for a bonus project.

Materials are white mulberry and cumaru (?). I believed it was cumaru until someone posted pictures in a recent thread of their cumaru and it didn't look like this. Whatever, it is very hard, as hard as ipe; but more beautiful.
Final weight is 22 oz.
Finish is blonde shellac.

Good looking mallet and sturdy too. The awl is a really nice turning as well. At first I thought it might fit in the handle of the mallet. Looks like you gave Dave a teaser for the fall marking tool swap.

Great job Rick! I need to try mixing woods for turning - love that effect you got - especially on the awl! Now that you all have drag me kicking and screaming to the lathe, I'm going to have to try and do more!

Just read your post on using Formica. Who knew!? I'll definitely be picking some samples up next time I'm at the big box :))

As the recipient, I love this set. I used the mallet for the first time last night. Whatever that wood is in the head, it's hard stuff. Heavy too. This thing has a slightly smaller profile than my old mesquite mallet but weighs a bit more I think so whatever it is, it's good stuff. Look beautiful as well. I'm happy to have it and will be using it plenty!

Excellent job Rick! Thank you!

I saw something similar to this glue up when I was googling mallets. I tried to do a blind on the head so the handle didn't show from the top since I was using some burl. Love the pictures of your glue up for this look.

I considered that with a little metal spring to provide tension but was afraid it would fall out when pounding.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Very impressed with the styling and wood choices.
I love the contrast. That actually does look like Ipe in my opinion, but it is of course hard to see from here.
and Mulberry is my favorite wood, so i love this combo. The burn lines and the styling is very neat looking. I really like this set!

Very nice looking Mallet, the glue up turned out extremely well, and the lines are just icing, well maybe the lines are spectacular, and the matching awl is the icing.

Thanks for posting.

You can see better pics of this wood on my urn project. One board of it came with a load of ipe but in person they have different grain, different end grain, and are different colors. The end grain looks like cumaru to me and the heartwood is supposed to be dark brown. But I can't find any at local lumber yards.

Nice work on the mallet and awl. I can never make up my mind between formica or the wire.

Your glue ups always blow me away. So seamless. When I consider making something in this style you're my benchmark. Top notch.

Did you make the awl point too?

Wow, thank you Todd, very kind of you to say.

The awl point came in a box of machinist tools bought at auction. I believe it was used as a punch. It already had those rings and all I did was sharpen it.
