Project Information

I have two methods for Djembe construction.
One is made from three laminated-stave sections.(like the 2011 black walnut project)
This one (and the Quilted maple project) are my ''D'' series drums which are made from 16 laminated forms, that are bevelled to fit together.
The outer layer here was some black walnut, then the second layer african mahogany, then the rest of the layers are douglas fir. Once I start to turn them on the lathe the inner woods start to appear as I get deeper in.
All the metalwork bending, welding, grinding, sanding, polishing is done in my little shop too.
This particular model can be easily tuned with a 3/8''wrench in sequence around the drum. Hardware takes me around 20+hrs to make but makes skinning it a breeze…( no rope to pull!!)
Even the insides of the ''D'' series are sanded and finished to allow better resonation and bass airflow.
The finishing on this one was like an old hot rod….Sanded to 600,hand wiped polyurethane into the pores then wet sanded and sprayed around 5- or 6 times with a day or two in between coats.
.....Hope you like.

That is a gorgeous drum. Steel fittings has got to be easier to manage than knotting them. I've cramped up my hands more than a few times skinning my djembes.

How's it sound?

Eh. nevermind. I know how it sounds. That thing sounds like a bell, doesn't it.

I don't wanna work, just want to play, just want to bang on THAT drum all day! :)

Fantastic looking instrument. Love the hardware, too.

I'm not sure if I like it… You'll have to send me one to verify.

Amazing job. I've always wanted to build a drum but I changed my mind. I think anything I did would be a disappointment now that I've seen yours. You may as well send it on over now that you shattered my dreams. I won't even play it. I'll just keep it in the case in my living room.
