Project Information

This chess board is 20" x 20", solid wood, and the squares are 2" x 2". The dark squares are American Black Walnut and the light squares are Maple and the border between the squares is Cherry. The border of the board is Cherry with Purplehart trim. The feet are American Black Walnut 1" x 1". I used Splines on all of the end grain joints and around the boarder. All of the color are natural I used not stain.

First I select a good color board.
Be careful not to burn the wood.
I use a compact fluorescent light to brings out the dark purple just before I apply the finish.
The compact fluorescent has some Ultraviolet like that bring out the purple.
I also blow out any sanding dust before I apply the finish.
The finish is M. L. Campbell Satin Krystal which is post-catalyzed conversion varnish finishing system which is Water white and non-yellowing.

That's marvelous! Like the contrasting wood colors and the purpleheart trim makes a great accent.
