Hey all, (as seen on Forged in Fire)
Just sharing my latest project, a 2 x 72 grinder, (meaning 2" wide belt x 72" in length). This is a kit in that I ordered from Brian House of HousemadeUS, He had the flat work CNC'd as well the raw square tube available as well. He has recommended vendors for the wheels as well the motor and variable speed drive. The grinder required a bit fabrication work and some welding as well. This orange beast is powered by a 2hsp 3P motor and runs on 220V. The variable speed controller allows minute speed adjustments as well as running in reverse. The grinder runs in a vertical position for most applications and rotates 90 degrees for horizontal grinding. Shown here is the standard vertical platen and the horizontal worktable. There are many other attachments and wheel options, e.g.10" wheel for larger radius grinding all the way down to 1/2" wheels used for grinding fullers in knives. The good news is the grinder can run from extremely slow speeds to extremely high speeds, allowing for wood and metal tasks and also has a slack belt feature. I wanted a color to make the grinder stand out (but should have had the pieces powder coated. I used acid to take the zinc plating off the fasteners and heated them with my torch, then a dunk in motor oil. That process leaves a nice blackened finish on all the hardware. The great news about a 2 x 72 grinder like this; lots of attachments to choose from as well as hundreds of grinding / sanding belt options. Note the exotic wood handle for belt changes...... Who needs a knife for Christmas?
Thx
Greg
